Kinabuhi

Philippines Hall: National Gallery Stand: SF-N20

Kinabuhi creates handcrafted fashion that works to regenerate the planet, provides sustainable livelihood opportunities, and helps people build meaningful connections with their clothes. They do this in collaboration with yarn producers, weavers, garment manufacturers, and NGOs based in the Philippines.

They are passionate about craft innovation and collaborating with a community of indigenous handloom weavers to explore the Philippine identity through textiles while also ensuring a fulfilling and secure livelihood for these communities. Together with Philippine artisans, they co-create contemporary handwoven textiles that are rooted in Philippine culture while aiming to have a global appeal. They offer customisable made-to-order handwoven textiles as well as ready-to-wear and wholesale fashion products.

To address the issue of excessive waste and the negative environmental impacts of the production of virgin synthetic materials in the fashion industry, Kinabuhi creates its handwoven textiles and fashion products using either upcycled high-quality second-hand garments, deadstock fabrics and scrap fabrics, or Philippine natural fibres. They mainly use Philippine cotton and Abaca, a plant endemic to the Philippines that helps minimize soil erosion and helps prevent floods and landslides. Through their partnerships with NGOs such as Fibershed Philippines, they aim to support Philippine farmers, yarn manufacturers and handloom weavers work towards adopting regenerative practices.
