Eyob Bekele
Eyob Bekele is the General Manager, CEO, and Owner of Desta PLC, an ethical garment manufacturing company based in Ethiopia. The Bekele family transitioned from trading to manufacturing in 1993, starting with plastic shoes and shoe soles. Over the years, they diversified their operations, eventually moving into the textile and garment industry in 2010, following the Ethiopian Government's encouragement to explore horticulture and textiles. By 2013, Desta PLC had fully committed to garment production, focusing on quality and efficiency, which attracted American and European buyers.
Under Eyob's leadership, Desta PLC has significantly expanded its operations. The company's new Butajira facility, a state-of-the-art 12,000-square-meter plant, is evidence of its growth and commitment to sustainability. Eyob believes that sustainability is crucial for Desta's success. His vision includes creating a profound social and environmental impact, ensuring that Desta PLC remains a responsible and innovative player in the garment industry.
Eyob is deeply committed to his employees, fostering a family-like environment and addressing their social needs. Desta PLC hires people with disabilities, representing about 5-10% of the workforce, and focuses on women's empowerment, with women making up 90% of the staff.
